Junior Science Explorers: Dramatic Science

Calling all Junior Science Explorers!

Join us in this Dramatic Science workshop as we roleplay to explore the science concepts through drama.

In each episode of the workshop, children will:

  • Step into the roles of various characters and participate in an imagined dramatic situation
  • Explore a Science topic through interaction, inquiry, and discovery
  • Apply science concepts learnt and exercise problem-solving skills to help the characters in each episode
  • Nurture a greater appreciation and interest in the discovery of the world around them

Join us now for a fun-filled holistic experiential approach in the discovery of our world!

NLB Molly 2022 Science Video Walkthrough

Activity 1: Balancing Me!

In this activity, children will get to experience centre of balance with their own body. Children will attempt to balance a beanbag on their head as they walk in a straight line from one end of the tape to the other. For differentiation, to cater to the abilities of the different ages, bean bags can be added or removed, while children maintain their balance on the line as they walk.

Objective(s):

Children will be able to…

  1. Find out ways to maintain balance
  2. Walk from one end to the other while balancing the beanbag on head

Suggested procedures (or alternatives as deemed fit by the class teachers):

  1. Have children line up at the starting point.
  2. Have the first child to pick up a beanbag and balance it on the head.
  3. Next, have the child walk along the line on the mat while maintaining balance of the beanbag on the head. If the beanbag drops, pick it up and place it on the head before continuing to walk until the ending point.
  4. Once the child has reached the ending point, bring the beanbag back to the starting point and sit at the side. While waiting, the child may cheer for the other children who are completing the activity.
  5. Repeat Steps 2 – 4 until everyone in the group has tried the activity.
  6. If time allows, the children may choose to try the activity again at a higher level, this time round balancing 2 beanbags on their shoulders as they walk.

Possible questions to ask during the activity:
– How did you balance yourself while walking along the line?
– How did you feel balancing the beanbag on your head?

Watch the video below!

Activity 2: Exploring Centre of Balance with Objects

In this hands-on experiential activity, children will take turns to explore the centre of balance of a variety of objects by attempting to balance them on their fingers.

The activity would showcase the idea that the centre of balance may not always be in the geometric centre of the object but the point where the object stabilises on the finger. This activity also serves as a practice to locating the centre of balance of different objects before applying the concept in the craft session thereafter.

Objective(s):

Children will be able to…

  1. Carry out simple investigations to find out the centre of balance of different objects
  2. Talk to their peers or teachers about their observations and findings

Suggested procedures (or alternatives as deemed fit by the class teachers):

  1. Group children into small groups.
  2. Distribute a set of objects to each group.
  3. Have children recall Bernie the dog from the storybook read and pick an object to try balancing on their finger.
  4. Students can explore trying to balance the object at various point to explore where the centre of balance is. The centre of balance of an object is where students will be able to balance it with just a fingertip.
  5. Next, have children take turns to share with their peers or teachers how they balanced the object.
  6. Repeat Steps 3 – 5 until everyone has tried the activity.

Possible questions to ask during the activity:
– How did you know the object will balance at this point?
– What do you think will happen if I shift my finger to the left/right instead?

Watch the video below!

Craft: My Balancing Bernie

Children will unleash their creativity to design and customise their own Balancing Dog craft (refer to example below) as they apply the concept on centre of balance learnt to construct the craft to bring home (e.g., finding out where to stick the weights to try to get the dog to balance on their fingers). Upon completion, children will hold the toy on their finger tip, allowing them to see centre of balance in action as they play with the toy.

Objective(s):

Children will be able to…

  1. Find out where to place the weights to balance the dog
  2. Make their own balancing dog craft

Suggested procedures (or alternatives as deemed fit by the class teachers):

  1. Write name at the back of the dog paper template.
  2. Decorate the dog template as desired
  3. Children who have completed colouring can try to find out where the weights should be pasted by clipping the wooden pegs* on different parts of the dog.
  4. Teacher will check to ensure the dog is balanced before moving on to the next step. Teacher can facilitate where necessary.
  5. Children can then proceed to paste the eraser weights behind the 2 front limbs of the dog by removing the film on the double-sided tape attached to the erasers.
  6. Start playing by balancing the dog on the finger. Children can explore other ways of balancing their dog (e.g., balancing on fingertip, balancing on a pencil, transferring the dog from one finger to the other finger).
